When we launched the YOU series, the goal was simple: to showcase the diverse stories that shape who we are and to celebrate the individuality that strengthens our tribe. What we didn’t anticipate was how deeply these stories would resonate, creating a narrative that explores universal truths about identity, belonging, resilience, and growth.
If you’re curious about the inspiration behind YOU and how it all began, you can read more about the project’s ideation in David Afonso's own words.

Finding Home in Little Moments
Imagine leaving your homeland at 20 years old, stepping into a world where you could finally choose who to be. That’s the story of Ghazaleh Motia, who reflects on the challenges of being an Iranian woman and the beauty of creating belonging in unexpected places.
I realised I don’t belong in my old narrative anymore. But here, in Portugal, I find belonging in the little things: enjoying the sun, feeling safe, and connecting over coffee and tashkas.
Her story is a powerful reminder that while moving away can feel like losing your roots, it can also mean planting new ones — ones that grow stronger because they’re your choice. And let’s be honest, who hasn’t felt that “in-between world” at some point in their life?
Surf, Anxiety, and the Waves of Life
Our second episode dives into the deep (pun intended) with Paulo Canas. A story about overcoming imposter syndrome, finding purpose, and riding life’s waves — literally.
At a low point in my life, a friend suggested surfing. It was transformative. Years later, I co-founded a programme teaching kids social-emotional skills through surfing.
The takeaway? Sometimes the best way to find balance is to dive into something new, even if it’s terrifying. Oh, and if you ever doubt the healing power of the ocean, just ask a surfer.
From Quiet Observer to Confident Contributor
If you’ve ever hesitated to speak up in a meeting, you will recognise yourself in Episode 3. Tiago Santos opens up about how being an introvert shaped his journey, from overthinking everything to embracing moments of discomfort.
I started interacting more with people, giving lectures, and, surprisingly, I enjoyed it. Now, I feel much more comfortable sharing my thoughts—even in meetings where I used to stay quiet.
His story is a testament to growth. It’s also proof that with the right environment and encouragement, even the most introverted among us can find their voice. (Cue the applause for those colleagues who nudge us out of our shells.)
Experience Across Generations: How We All Push Each Other Forward
In our final episode, we explore the interplay between experience and different perspectives. Pedro Valente Gomes and Eugenia Cozma: two voices — one seasoned, one newer — share how they challenge and inspire each other.
With years, you learn to adapt and stay aware of the bigger picture. But younger colleagues push you out of your comfort zone with ideas you’d never consider. It’s humbling and exciting.
This dialogue is a masterclass in how mutual respect and collaboration can lead to incredible outcomes. It’s not about who’s right — it's about finding the best ideas in the diversity of thought and experience.
