For Pedro Gomes, a Frontend Enginer at Mercedes-Benz.io, excellence is about reliability. “Excellence means being someone others can depend on — delivering what’s expected without unnecessary frustrations,” he shares. But his journey was far from ordinary, and his blueprint for success is as unique as his sense of humor.

A Nonlinear Path to Success
Pedro’s path to becoming a developer had its fair share of twists. After high school, he faced some academic challenges. “I decided to fail math twice,” he jokes, “because I felt like it.” By the time he entered college for computer engineering, he was ready to embrace the challenges ahead.
“I failed Programming 1,” he admits, “which is ironic for a developer.” But instead of letting that define him, Pedro found his stride, completing his degree in three years.
When a friend mentioned that Mercedes-Benz.io (then in its early stages) was looking for developers, Pedro jumped at the opportunity. “I thought, why not? Let me try,” he recalls. The decision would shape his future.
The Call That Changed Everything
Pedro vividly remembers the moment he got the call offering him a role at Mercedes-Benz.io.
“I was out on a run, and I didn’t recognize the number, so I hung up at first,” he laughs. “But then I realized it could be important.”
The wind made it hard to hear, and he could barely catch what was being said, but the offer marked the start of an exciting new chapter. “It was chaotic, but fitting for me and my life.”
Building for the User
As a front-end developer, Pedro thrives on creating intuitive, user-friendly experiences.
“We make websites usable,” he explains. “I want users to navigate without even thinking — they should just know where to go and what to do.”
This passion for the visual and interactive aspects of development began during his degree.
“I spent weekends building small websites for fun. It was something I found really fulfilling, and I wanted to do it professionally.”
A Culture That Supports Change
For Pedro, Mercedes-Benz.io stands out because of the freedom it offers to innovate and improve.
“Even in a company this big, there’s room for change,” he emphasises. “Yes, it can be slow with processes, laws, and budgets, but the fact that we can make an impact is incredible.”
He also appreciates the humour and authenticity that permeates the culture.
“I value people who do what they say they’re going to do,” he shares. “And I love the sense of humour here — it’s a core part of the environment.”
Pedro’s Blueprint
Pedro’s journey reminds us that success doesn’t require a linear path — it requires determination, adaptability, and a bit of humour. By staying true to his passion and embracing challenges, he’s built a career that’s as reliable as the experiences he strives to create.
